Alan Bradley, a Dublin based documentary maker, has been honoured with the overall “Mental Health Champion Award” at the Mental Health Media Awards, organised by Headline. The award celebrates outstanding contributions to the coverage of mental health issues.

Bradley directed the 2023 RTÉ documentary “Patrick: A Young Traveller Lost”, which exposed the troubling suicide rates among the Irish Traveller community. He also created the groundbreaking documentary "Anorexia, My Family and Me," narrated by Angela Scanlon, which aired last month, exploring the experiences of individuals living with anorexia.

His latest work, RTÉ Documentary on One: “Invisible Men - Ireland's Incels”, explores the online community of young men in Ireland, addressing their sexual frustrations and mental health struggles that can lead to harmful misogyny.

The Mental Health Media Awards celebrate stories that break down stereotypes and enhance the public’s understanding of mental health issues. The awards are organised by Headline, Shine’s national programme for responsible reporting and representation of mental illness.

On presenting the award Aine O’Meara of Headline remarked:

“Alan contributes greatly to real social change in Ireland, his care for his contributors is of the utmost importance in his work, creating dignified and vitally important documentaries. Based on his high quality storytelling, and commitment to exploring underrepresented mental health experiences, we’ve no hesitation in awarding him this champion title.”

Speaking at the awards Bradly remarked:

“It is a great honor for my work to be acknowledged with this award. I especially want to express my gratitude to those who have the courage to share their stories with me, hoping they can assist others. I want to extend particular thanks to Patrick's parents, as his passing had a significant impact on the Traveller community. It was such an important story to tell, it has been wonderful to see it resonate with so many.”

“Patrick: A Young Traveller Lost” and “Anorexia, My Family and Me”, are both available to watch on the RTÉ player. Bradley’s RTÉ Documentary on One: Invisible Men - Ireland's Incels is available on all audio streaming platforms.
